The Nexus Player came with a voice search remote and an optional gaming remote. It also was the first device to offer Android TV, which is the new technology that replaced its ill-fated Google TV offering.
If you go to the section of the Google Play Store, you’ll find a lot of TV & Audio Chromecasts and the NVIDIA Shield. NVIDIA’s device is also powered by Android TV and offers 4K Ultra HD TV and is a powerhouse built for serious gaming. The site Droid Life first spotted this today. Apparently, major retail outlets have been sold out for several weeks, and I was able to find some on ebay.
Android TV Isn’t Dead Though
During Google I/O it was noted that new APIs for recording live TV and a lot more will be part of the Android N upgrade for the Android TV platform. Among other updates, new channels are coming which include Starz and WatchESPN. With so many set-top devices out there now, even if the company decided it wasn’t worth making its own box anymore, it will still allow manufacturer’s like NVIDIA, Xiaomi, Vizio, and others to put Android TV and Google Cast in their TVs and entertainment devices.
